Writing PromptsYoung Writer's Posts
I felt this prompt would be a good one to use as it’s such an important topic. Honestly, THIS ONE IS SO HARD to write about! It’s hard to remember the first book I read that inspired me to become a writer…hmmm…lemme think…I don’t think it was necessarily a book per say, more like a book series. It’s called The O’Malley Series and it’s written by one of my favorite Christian authors, Dee Henderson. It is made up of 6 books and 2 prequels, detailing the lives of a family of 7 siblings who adopted one another and formed their own family, even changing their last names to “O’Malley”. All the siblings end up becoming believers, and are put in dangerous situations that force them to trust in God and His plan for their lives. There is romance, suspense, action, and drama in all of them, keeping me on the edge of my seat and up til the wee hours of the night as I raced to finish one, only to start the next. I loved the clever and witty dialogue, the way the author built suspense throughout the story, included the Gospel message, made you laugh one minute and cry the next, and of course, I loved the hilarious and relatable characters. (BTW: The character couples in her books are some of my ALL TIME FAVS!) Dee Henderson’s books were so fascinating and well-written that after I read them, I began developing my own characters and imagining different situations for them. Eventually, I began writing stories about them, and the rest is history. π

Hmm…. I can’t think of a specific book/series that brought out the writer in me. If I had to give an answer, I’d say the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan, tied with Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. I love love love both of those series. I love the way they both tie in fantasy elements but in the modern world; it makes it seem almost attainable or real. It really inspired me to write my own stories like this. Also The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Her writing style is how I want to be able to write some day. I could read those book over and over again and never get bored. #teampeeta
